How to Register a Car to a Business

Registering a car to a business is essential if you use that vehicle in your day-to-day work operations.  By registering your car to your business, you can receive a reduction in taxes as well as lower insurance rates, by claiming the vehicle as a deduction.  Luckily, registering your car to your business is a relatively simple process.  Read below for tips on how to gain all of the benefits of having a business-registered car today.

First, you will need to gather car paperwork.  The exact documents needed depend on where you live, but this will likely include your driver's license, car title, business address and car insurance information.  To find out which documents in particular you need to register your car to your business, contact your local Department of Motor Vehicles.

Once you have these documents in hand, take them to your local state office.  There, you will fill out an application to register your car with your business.  This form is usually no different than any other car registration form.  You must simply choose "business use" at the appropriate section of the document.  The state office will let you know which form is the proper one and will help you fill it out.  If your state requires that you also register your car with your county or city, you may also have to fill out a registration form at one of these offices.  In most cases, though, you can fill out just one form at your state office that will be efficient for both state and county/city business car registration.

Once all of the documents are submitted and reviewed, you will receive your car registration.  At this time, you car is a registered part of your business and you can receive the benefits of that.  Make a few copies of the registration and keep them in separate locations.  Be sure to always keep a copy in your vehicle.
