Tips for Setting up an Art Gallery
If you have the notion to set up an art gallery, here are a few tips to get started that will impress both the artists and the community alike. Art galleries provide a way for artists to gain exposure and the potential for income while the general public gets to see new artistic endeavors. Learn below how to get started.
Shy Away From Bad Art
Sometimes when putting together a local art gallery, you may find it tempting to accept a popular resident who “does” art. These artists often are not the best in terms of technique or end result, so though they may draw a crowd, avoid putting the work of these artists in your gallery.
Make the Art Easy to See
No one wants to crane to see what’s available in an art gallery, but some gallery owners spend so much time worrying about positioning the work to make it appropriately “artsy” that they don’t think about patrons and their experience in the gallery. Make sure that people of various heights have a good view of all of the pieces available.
Include Information about the Exhibit
Some people are art hounds and will know what is going on at every gallery in town. In small- to mid-sized cities, the art scene usually is small enough that people involved in this community won’t need an introduction to the exhibit or artists. Others will need this information, though! There’s nothing more intimidating about art exhibits than to show up and feel lost because the gallery owner provides no information.
Have Fun
Art is beautiful and often awe-inspiring, but that doesn’t mean that it can’t be enjoyable, too. When you’re putting your exhibit together, try to think about what people will enjoy and design something to make them go home with pleasant memories of their time at your show.
