How to Start an Internet Business
Starting an internet business can be a very profitable entrepreneurship venture. Everyday, people buying all kinds of products and services go online to get what they need. Given that this trend is going to continue, it's worth learning a few things about how to start an Internet business.
It seems as if everything is now available online. Big or small, expensive or costing a penny, you can buy anything online. So if you're thinking about starting an Internet business, the first question to ask is what kind? Will it be a content site that attracts advertising? An eCommerce site selling products you manufacturer? A service website? Or a drop ship eCommerce website selling products manufactured by others? Whatever the case, the steps are very similar no matter what your Internet business. Let's say you already know what you want to sell on the Internet and have developed a business plan.
Domain Name
You’ll first want to determine your business’ name. Keep it simple, but come up with a few variations. Why? Because the second step is seeing if your domain name is available. The domain name is what appears in the URL of your web browser. You may come up with the perfect name for your business, only to go to one of the online services selling domain names to discover its been taken. If that happens, you have two choices: contact the person who owns the domain and see if they want to sell it a price you can afford, or move on to another domain name. Many people choose to adjust the name of their business when they find the domain is not available. When you buy your domain, you'll see that you have a choice between ".com." ".net," ".org," etc. .com is still preferred, though .net has gained a lot of credibility. .org is used for non-profits.
Another important step that bears mentioning is to investigate any licensing requirements for your business. Will you be shipping fresh baked cookies out of your home? Great. What are the regulations in your state and the states you'll be shipping to? Consulting with a lawyer at this point is usually a good idea.
Hire Professionals
Once you have your domain name and are certain you can do business legally where you want, you're ready to set up your website. If you have the money, hire a designer, a copywriter and Internet marketing professional. These are rarely the same person. In fact, if you hire a designer and ask them to write copy and optimize your site for search, you'll likely get a well-designed site that's not very well written and not ready for the search engines. If your site is copy heavy, then you may want to invest in a good writer and use one of the many free or inexpensive web design templates. As a small business owner, the one function you should take on yourself is marketing. There are lots of resources available to help you get started in online marketing.
Start a Blog
Finally, you're ready to launch your Internet business. Don't expect a lot of traffic on your very first day being live. It takes time and effort to get a website noticed by its target audience. Participate on forums related to your product, try article marketing, social networking, and by all means, include a blog on your website. It's still one of the best ways to gain free, organic search rankings.
