How to Start Advertising on a Blog

Andrew Otis, The Writers Network

Blogs are a fantastic tool that allows people to write about any subject they want and publish the content online. While establishing a niche for writing about your interests, you can also try to monetize your blog. That is, you can set up a blog with advertisements so that you can earn a profit. There are a few Internet advertising means you can use to advertise on your blog. The most prevalent one is Google AdSense.

Google AdSense

To start your Google AdSense account, you first need to establish a credible blog. Google will only allow the advertisements it carries to be displayed on websites that have real content. Once you establish your Google AdSense account, you can configure how you would like to their ads to display on your blog site. Google's fee structure works on a pay per click basis. Every time someone clicks on an ad on your website, you get a little money for the click. Usually, Google will have advertisements displayed on the sidebar, below each entry or on the top of the website. The more prominent the location of the advertisement, the higher the chance you have for someone to click on it, meaning more money for you. Be careful not to anger your audience though. Other companies, such as Amazon and eBay, also offer popular online advertising services. They function similarly to Google AdSense.

In-Text Advertisements

In-text advertisements are also known as context ads. Some online companies allow you to place advertisements within the text of your blog entries. Using algorithms, it determines what keywords will be selected. These words, if moused-over, will cause an advertisement to display on your screen. One company that provides this service is VibrantMedia. Kontera and Infolinks are two other companies that provide similar services.

Tags

It is generally a good idea to tag your posts with words key words or phrases that are likely to maximize your revenue. These tags establish links that advertisers use to determine which ads will be placed on your website. Some tags, especially those dealing with money, have a tendency to bring advertisements with a higher pay per click rate, which means more money for you.

A Word of Warning

Avoid clicking on the advertisements on your own sites because Google uses analytical software to determine if website owners abuse the advertising links on their websites. If Google firmly suspects that you are abusing its advertising program, it will ban you from using the program all together.

Paying Websites

If you would like to get paid to blog but do not have the desire to operate your own website and think that you might do better under websites that help direct traffic to you, then there are some options. Hubpages.com, for instance, is one of these websites. They have a profit sharing option where they facilitate your ability to sign up for online advertising programs. These programs include their own ad program as well as Amazon and eBay's advertising programs. Unless you have established a large volume of traffic for your blog, it is very difficult to effectively monetize your blog. Some blog topics work better than others. With advertising on your blog and good planning, you might be able to make some money!
