Making Money from AdSense
Google AdSense allows website publishers eighteen years and older to monetize their websites by displaying Google ads targeted to their web content. Additionally, website publishers can earn income via the AdSense for search feature when they insert a custom search engine on their websites for visitors to search the web.
Before signing up for Google AdSense, make sure that you have access to edit your website’s HTML source code. This is required to display Google ads or an AdSense for search box on your website. Applicants without a website or whose website is incompatible with JavaScript can create a blog through Blogger.
After setting up your website and verifying that it meets Google’s standards, complete the Google AdSense application. The application review times usually range from two to three days. Once your application is approved you can start displaying ads on your website within minutes.
Review Google’s program policy, select a product, design your ad and copy and paste the generated code into the designated area of your site to initiate the ad placement process. Ads should start appearing on your site immediately after pasting the HTML code.
Furthermore, you can earn more income through channels which allow you to track the performance of specific pages of your website and ads. This feature allows you to create additional channels to evaluate the operation of your other domains in order to glean information on where your clicks are derived. There are two types of channels namely the URL channel and the custom channel. URL channels keep track of the performance of certain pages on your site, while custom channels assess the performance of ad units you group together.
To capitalize on the channel feature as an income generator, Google recommends that you use URL channels. On the other hand, if you run a business-oriented website or if your prefer a strong reporting system to evaluate the effectiveness of your site, then select custom channels.
Strategically placing ads on your site will enhance the effectiveness of such ads. Ads located in the area of the page that is visible without scrolling and those in the proximity of valuable content and navigational links usually have higher performance results.
Along with strategic ad placement comes the ad format. Wider ad formats and ads with image or video tend to have a higher performance ratio. Google recommends that you use the large rectangle (336x280), medium rectangle (300x250) and the wide skyscraper (160x600) ad formats, since these have received the highest performance ratings.
Optimizing the color palettes of your ads will also help you to increase your earnings through Google AdSense. Your choice of color palettes can demonstrate the disparity between ads your website visitors will notice and possibly click on and those to which they will pay little to no attention. In order to prevent the latter from occurring with your ads, Google recommends that you use three techniques based on your website’s design.
Such techniques include blend, complement and contrast. When using the blend technique select the same color as the background of your website for the background and borders of your ads. If your website has a white background and you are unable to devote the time to selecting ad colors, you can use Google’s AdSense pre-designed open air palette.
For the complement method, select colors that are already on your site. Make sure that your ads’ background and borders do not match the area where you intend to place the ads. On the other hand, the contrast technique requires colors that stand out against your site’s background. Your site must have a dark background. In this case, you can use a palette with a white background, white borders and blue titles.
In addition to implementing these color techniques, make sure that you use colors for your ad texts and links that already exist on your site. Take for instance, if the links on your site are green and the text is black, you can use green links and black text in your ads. Furthermore, you can use blue, since this is a common color seen by most users.
Traffic driven to your site will allow you to earn money each time a visitor clicks on your site’s ads. The content of your site also goes hand in hand with your site’s traffic. Therefore, it is important that you provide valuable content that will attract visitors and convert them from first-time visitors to regular visitors.
