Sales Director Interview Tips

Jonathan Bales, The Writers Network

Sales directors manage a company's sales staff and oversee all aspects of sales strategy, and although the position is one of high prestige, the general interview process is not much different from any other job.  You need to be as prepared as possible to stick out from your competition and prove you are the right person for the position.  You will have no chance at receiving the job if you cannot, first and foremost, sell yourself.  Read below for a few tips on how to nail an interview for a sales director position.

First, make sure your resume is well-organized and highlights your greatest accomplishments.  Your resume should explain how you have gone above and beyond the call of duty in the past to create a prosperous work environment for your employers.  Make sure the resume is catered to the specific sales director job for which you are applying.  There is no reason to list a past job that has nothing to do with sales or being a manager.

You might think that the resume does not matter once you have already secured an interview, but this is not the case.  You will need to take a few copies of your resume to your interview to provide to anyone and everyone who will be interviewing you.  Companies often have various people speak to you about a position, and many times only one or two of them are familiar with your resume.  Thus, the form and quality of your resume is just as important during the interview as prior to it.

On the day of the interview, be sure to leave much earlier than you think you might need to do.  You never know when you will run into heavy traffic, get caught in a storm, and so on.  Employers do not care why you are late, and you hold very little chance of securing a sales director position if you are not on time.  Arrive at the place of business far ahead of the time of the interview and hang out nearby.  You may go into the office to check yourself in no more than 15 minutes prior to the start of the interview.  Bring a notepad, a few copies of your resume, and dress in a clean, conservative manner.

Once your interview commences, make sure your cell phone is off.  Also be sure you are thoroughly versed in the specifics of the company at which you are applying.  Employers care less about your education than you might think, wanting to know more about the future and why you are the best person for their particular company.  By demonstrating a solid understanding of their business and sales strategic plans, you are showing you have a lot of interest in the position and have already shown the ability to go the extra mile.  Show them how your specific skill set is a perfect fit for their goals, and discuss how you plan to implement your ability as a sales director into their company.  The major difference between an interview for a traditional job and one for a sales director position is that you must show the ability to lead from the start.  Never dominate an interview by babbling, but do take charge and demonstrate immediately that you are a leader with unique ideas.
