Tips for Preparing to Take a Hiring Test

Erik Neilson, The Writers Network

Preparing to take an employment test can be a rather stressful experience, and most people could use all the tips and help they can get. The fact is, an employment test can make or break your ability to land a job, making it all the more important to put as much effort into the preparation process as possible. While preparing to take an employment test can be difficult, there are a variety of things you can do in order to increase your chances of success. By taking the following tips into consideration, you’ll be able to go into your employment test with a calm and focused mindset.

Know What to Expect

Preparing for an employment test can be hard enough, but is made even more difficult when you don’t know what to expect out of the test in question. When meeting with a potential employer, be sure to ask for as much information as you might need in order to determine what the test will be like. Some of the things you might want to know about are the length of the test, potential subject matter and whether it will be short answer or multiple choice. The more you know about the test before going into the process, the better your chances of succeeding.

Study as Much as Possible

Regardless of the type of pre-employment test you’re required to take in order to secure a position, you’ll want to study as much as you possibly can. This can be quite difficult in certain situations, however. For example, some pre-employment tests have more to do with personality and honesty ratings than any actual facts, in which case studying can be next to impossible. Be sure to learn as much about the company as you can, which can help to increase your chances of doing well on the test even if it is somewhat nontraditional. Also, carve out a specific time of the day or week to study, as unplanned study sessions tend to be less effective than those which are planned out ahead of time.

De-stress Before the Test

Going into a pre-employment test with a great deal of stress on your plate is no way to succeed. In fact, this will more than likely result in a poor showing, which is something that should be avoided at all costs. There are a variety of ways to alleviate stress before taking a pre-employment test. For example, many people like to use meditation and mindfulness techniques prior to showing up for the test, which can help to encourage relaxation and a clear mindset. Additionally, it can be helpful to incorporate positive affirmations into your pre-test ritual. Positive affirmations can be as simple as telling yourself that you’re bound to do well on your test, which can actually drastically improve your chances of success. If you find yourself stressed out while taking the test, it’s important to take a moment to breathe and focus. After all, rushing through a test will do nothing but result in unnecessary problems.
