5 Coolest Gadgets from CES
Every year, nerds congregation on the Vegas strip to check out the Consumer Electronics Show, more commonly shortened to CES. CES is the biggest event of the year for electronics makers, as it's where they show off the latest technology and jockey for position in the consumer market. Due to the sheer number of products introduced at the event, it can be difficult to keep track of all the great innovations at the event, as they span across nearly anything related to technology.
LG 55" OLED TV
Just as the plasmas have become passé and LED technology has replaced the environmentally unfriendly LCD models, many manufacturers are putting OLED televisions on the market. OLED TVs are not only better for the environment, but they work without a backlight, produce better colors and are typically lighter than LCDs as well. The LG model introduced at CES is only 4 mm thick and extremely lightweight as well. While pricing for the TV has yet to be released, expect to pay over $2,000 for it, as you always pay a premium for the latest technology on release.
Dell XPS 13
While Dell and many other PC manufacturers have been the victim of Apple's laptop market dominance, the tide may soon change with the introduction of PC ultrabooks. Currently, the only popular ultrabook model is the Macbook Air, which combines high computing power with a very small package. The Dell XPS 13 is even smaller than the Air yet has a much more powerful processor than the latest Air model, using either a Core i5 or i7 processor. While the XPS 13 isn't the first competitor to the Air, it's the one expected to put the biggest dent in Apple's market share.
Fujifilm Finepix X-Pro1
This is the camera that got all the plaudits at this year's CES. It's a retro style camera that uses all of the latest high end photo technology. It features a great set of lenses: a wide-angle lens, a 50mm and a macro lens as well, giving you much more customizability than most similarly priced cameras include. That said the X-Pro1 is still costly, as the body on its own will retail for about $1,700.
Gorilla Glass 2
One of the surprise introductions at CES 2012 was the new version of the famous Gorilla Glass, a component of many different high end gadgets. Used particularly on high end touch screens, Gorilla Glass. The technology for Gorilla Glass is fairly old, but it allows for a high density glass that's extremely resistant to breaking. The 2.0 version of the technology is said to be 20% stronger than the original and to have improved responsiveness, which is vital when it’s used on touchscreens.
Razer Project Fiona
This gadget may be a few years away from the production line, but it still gathered a ton of heat at CES. Project Fiona is designed to be the first gaming tablet designed for Microsoft's new Windows 8 operating system. While the included technology may change before the release date, the tablet will likely use an i7 chip with a solid state drive to go with its 10 inch screen, which has a resolution of 1280x800.
